Consultancy

My strategic communications consultancy is called Lyric; its ‘tagline’ is ‘Action is eloquence’, which the sharp-eyed amongst you might spot as a quote from Shakespeare’s Richard III. Why? Because Lyric helps organisations engage and behave better towards those around them – it’s not a ‘spin machine’; it won’t use words to cloak misdemeanours. Which makes the Richard III quote just that little bit sweeter.

Over thirty years I have led communications strategy, narrative development and stakeholder engagement for some of the UK’s most significant institutions and companies — including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Arts Council England, the Department for Transport, Heathrow Airport and the West of England Combined Authority. I’ve advised the leaders of several multi-national companies, and trained leadership teams across the world.

I advise at the most senior levels, and empower at the grassroots and frontline. This is lasting work that has shaped how many major organisations understand and tell their own stories.

Confidentiality, credibility and trustworthiness are core professional ethics. You will never find real clients, real colleagues or real situations in any of my creative writing — my fictional work is pure fiction. But the insights from life are of course impossible to separate from writing: thanks to this fascinating work, I know how institutions think, how power communicates, and where the gap between the two creates the most interesting stories about people.
